Elected Positions in the SIG Leadership

SIG Elections are generally held a the beginning of each year. If any of the following elected roles interest you, contact our managers: sigleaders at stc-techedit.org.

SIG volunteer roles include both elected and appointed positions. This page provides descriptions of the elected positions. See the Contacts page for information about the current SIG leaders and Volunteer Positions for information on the many volunteer opportunities.

The TE SIG offers volunteer opportunities that match your SIG experience (new to longtime members), professional experience (beginning your career to a leader in your field), and schedule (elected positions to one-time activities). Term: Two years
Time Commitment: Varies based on the time of year and the number of additional volunteers signed up to help you achieve all these goals.

As a SIG manager, you interact with SIG members, the Society office, and the STC board of directors.

Each SIG manager's role includes these tasks:
  • Review the SIG's mission statement annually and set goals for the year
  • Respond to SIG members' needs, offering them opportunities to volunteer, network, and gain leadership experience
  • Provide recognition to SIG volunteers through STC and SIG award programs
    • STC Community Achievement Award (CAA)
    • STC Pacesetter Award
    • STC Distinguished SIG Service Award (DSSA)
    • Technical Editing SIG Volunteer of the Year Award
    • Technical Editing SIG New Volunteer of the Year Award
    • Apex Award
  • Work with volunteers to
    • plan a successful program of activities that promote professional development
    • keep members informed of SIG activities
    • publish a newsletter
    • maintain a Web site that keeps SIG members up to date on events and volunteer opportunities, informs the technical communications community about our SIG's goals and achievements, and invites technical communicators to join the SIG and become involved
    • provide an online forum and discussion group
  • Communicate with the STC board, staff, and committees
  • Work with the SIG treasurer to prepare an annual budget, obtain approval of the budget from STC, and monitor SIG activities to ensure responsible stewardship of the budgeted funds
  • Lead the SIG's involvement at the STC International Conference, including
    • planning and leading the annual SIG business meeting
    • hosting a table at the Communities Reception
    • encouraging SIG members to participate in the conference as speakers, panelists, or progression leaders
  • Work with the membership manager to encourage increased SIG membership and volunteer involvement


Term: One year
Time Commitment: a few hours per month

The treasurer's role includes these tasks:
  • Manage the SIG budget
  • Prepare the SIG budget for the following year (October/November)
  • Coordinate with the Society office regarding the SIG's financial matters
  • Track expenditures
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by the SIG co-managers


Term: One year
Time Commitment: several hours per month

The secretary's role includes these tasks:
  • Record minutes at the monthly volunteer meetings and at the business meeting held at the Summit conference (may appoint a substitute if unable to attend the Summit conference)
  • Post volunteer meeting minutes and business meeting minutes to the Web
  • Perform additional duties if necessary as assigned by the SIG co-managers

Membership Manager

Term: One year
Time Commitment: a few hours per month

The membership manager's role includes these tasks:
  • Download the monthly membership report from stc.org, and report on membership numbers at each volunteer meeting
  • Send a welcome letter to each new or reinstated member
  • Promote membership renewal during the annual STC membership renewal campaign
    • Send renewal reminders to members
    • Inform SIG members of key membership renewal dates
  • Complete additional duties as necessary as assigned by the SIG co-managers

Social Media Manager

Term: One year
Time Commitment: a few hours per month

The social media manager's role includes these tasks:
  • Webmaster for the stc-techedit.org site
  • Keep the announcement list current
  • Send announcements about upcoming events and volunteer meetings to the SIG announcement list
  • Administer the e-mail discussion list, which sends e-mail discussions to every member who subscribes.
  • Upload information about upcoming events to the SIG website, and (working with other volunteers) set up the Eventbrite page for fundraisers, quarterly meetings, and other events
